Kimma Open 2018

In 2008, this blog closely followed the pursuit of International Master Mas Hafizulhelmi (IM Mas) to become Malaysia’s first Grandmaster (GM). IM Mas efforts was viewed as highly ambitious and got the attention of all chess enthusiast in Malaysia.

Though the GM title ultimately eluded IM Mas, his journey was anything but a failure. Each effort showed us what was possible and, in doing so, lit the way for future generations. If not for the minimal reason just to show such dreams could be pursued.

Now, in 2025, that dream has finally been realized. Yeoh Li Tian, after years of perseverance and astounding achievements, has ascended to become Malaysia’s first Grandmaster. This historic milestone is much more than a personal victory; it is the culmination of a journey that began with IM Mas and all those who paved the way before.

Yeoh Li Tian’s success is like a baton passed across a relay of generations. Today, as we celebrate GM Yeoh Li Tian’s triumph, let’s also pay tribute to IM Mas Hafizulhelmi, the first Malaysian who dared to try by opening that door.

Congratulations, GM Yeoh Li Tian! And thank you, IM Mas, for your pioneering spirit. The torch burns brighter than ever, lighting the way for future Malaysian chess stars.
